SEJARAH SEKOLAH HAJI ZAINUL ABIDIN

Sekolah ini ditubuhkan pada 11hb Januari 1965 dengan penggabungan beberapa Sekolah Lanjutan seperti:-
i) Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Westlands
ii) Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Georgetown
iii) Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Tanjong
iv) Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Macalister
v) Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Jalan Kelawei
vi) Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Glugor

Sekolah Menengah Rendah yang baru ini dinamakan Sekolah Menengah Jalan Scotland. Pada Peringkat awal bangunan ini terdiri daripada Blok A yang mengandungi 12 bilik darjah dan sebuah kantin sahaja. Seramai 726 murid (489 lelaki dan 237 perempuan) telah melaporkan diri dan ditempatkan di dalam 20 bilik darjah; 10 di bahagian pagi dan 10 lagi di bahagian petang. Guru besar yang pertama ialah En. Lim San Hoe yang dipindahkan dari Sekolah Menengah Westland pada 1hb. Januari, 1965.

Sebenarnya, sekolah ini telah bermula 6 bulan lebih awal, iaitu pada Julai 1964. Dalam bulan itu, En. Lim Chiang Choo dan murid-muridnya dari Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Westlands bersama-sama dengan En. Khoo-Yeoh Gan Hong dan murid-muridnya dari Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan Tanjong telah berpindah ke sekolah ini. En. Lim Chiang Choo telah diberi tugas untuk mendirikan sekolah ini. Salah satu daripada tugas-tugas yang dilakukan olehnya ialah meratakan dan mengadakan padang permainan sekolah yang dulunya merupakan sebuah kebun manggis. Dia juga bertanggungjawab menebus gunas sebuah kawasan rendah. Tempat ini sekarang sudah dijadikan tempat letak basikal.

Dalam tahun 1966, 2 blok bangunan lagi disiapkan - Blok B mengandungi 12 buah bilik darjah dan Blok C yang terdiri daripada 2 buah makmal Sains, 2 buah bilik pertukangan kayu, bilik stor dan tandas. Dalam tahun ini juga, En. Lim San Hoe ditukar ke Pejabat Pelajaran Pulau Pinang dan Guru Besar yang mengambil tempatnya ialah En. Chang Chor Yew.

Tahun 1967 adalah tahun yang bersejarah bagi sekolah ini kerana dibuka dengan rasminya oleh Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang, Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee, PMN., pada hari Jumaat 10hb. November, 1967. Pada tahun ini juga Pasukan Pengakap Sekolah dimulakan. Kumpulan pengakap yang kecil ini terdiri daripada 15 murid yang kelak menjadi pelatih-pelatih pengakap yang baru.

Dalam tahun 1968, jumlah murid sekolah ini berlipat ganda sehingga mencapai angka 1451 (dibandingkan dengan 726 murid pada tahun 1965). Dalam bulan April tahun itu, En. Chang Chor Yew ditukar ke Sekolah Heng Ee dan tempatnya diambil oleh En. Tang Gooi Fook. Setakat ini, sekolah ini adalah lebih terurus khasnya yang berkaitan dengan permainan dan kegiatan-kegiatan luar sekolah. Sekolah ini telah mengambil bahagian dalam pertandingan sukan yang diuruskan oleh Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Pulau Pinang. Kegiatan Pandu Puteri juga diperkenalkan kepada sekolah ini dan didaftarkan sebagai kumpulan yang ke-9 di Pulau Pinang. Bahagian Kadet St. John Ambulans ditubuhkan pada akhir tahun penggal satu.

Dalam tahun 1969, bilangan guru-guru dan murid-murid di sekolah ini bertambah lagi. Jumlah murid-murid ialah 1547 dan jumlah guru-guru yang bertugas di sekolah ini ialah 60 (dibandingkan dengan 39 dalam tahun 1965). Dalam tahun ini, sekolah ini menguruskan pertandingan Merentas Desa Tahunan, Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Pulau Pinang. Pasukan 'Ping Pong' juga mengambil bahagian dalam Pertandingan 'Ping Pong' yang diuruskan oleh Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Pulau Pinang. Kerja untuk menambahkan lagi 4 bilik darjah dan 2 bilik darjah Sains Rumah Tangga pada Blok C bermula pada tahun ini. (Bilik-bilik tersebut telah siap pada tahun 1971). En. Tang Gooi Fook bersara pada akhir bulan April. En. Khoo Teng Chye dari Sekolah Menengah Georgetown, Pulau Pinang ditukar ke sekolah ini sebagai Guru Besar yang baru.

Tahun 1970 adalah tahun yang bersejarah bagi sekolah ini sebab dapat mengadakan Sukan Tahunan yang pertama. Sukan Sekolah ini diadakan di padang La Salle.

Di antara tahun 1971 dan 1979, sekolah ini terus berkembang dan berjaya di bawah dua orang Guru Besarnya iaitu En. Khoo Teng Chye (1969-1978) dan En. Kang Kee Heng (1979). Satu peristiwa bersejarah yang berlaku pada 1hb. Mac, 1972 apabila nama sekolah ini ditukar kepada Sekolah Haji Zainul Abidin mengambil sempena nama Allahyarham Tuan Haji Zainul Abidin iaitu seorang pendidik Melayu yang terkenal di Pulau Pinang.

Dalam tahun 1980, En. Goh Hock Aun menjadi Guru Besar sekolah ini. Beberapa kemudahan diperkenalkan kepada sekolah ini dalam tahun 1981 dan 1982 oleh En. Goh Hock Aun. Di antaranya ialah Bilik Bilik Perpustakaan, Bilik Video, Bilik Mesyuarat yang berhawa dingin, pembesaran bilik guru dan pembinaan tempat letak basikal bagi murid-murid.

Dalam tahun ini (1985), beberapa peristiwa yang penting berlaku lagi. Kali ini, sekolah menyambut ulang tahunnya yang ke-21 dan selaras dengan ini memperkenalkan tingkatan 4 untuk murid-murid yang telah lulus dalam Peperiksaan S.R.P. di sekolah ini. Ini menjadikan sekolah ini bertaraf Sekolah Menengah Penuh bermula dari Januari 1985. Mulai tahun ini juga, Majalah Sekolah yang pertama diterbitkan untuk menyambut Ulangtahun ke-21 sekolah ini.

RINGKASAN RIWAYAT HIDUP ALLAHYARHAM TUAN HJ ZAINUL ABIDIN

HAJI ZAINUL ABIDIN BIN SULTAN MYDIN telah dilahirkan di Pulau Pinang pada 3hb. Oktober 1898. Beliau mula-mula belajar di Sekolah Chowrasta kemudian di Penang Free School. Setelah lulus persekolahnya, Haji Zainul Abidin telah diberi peluang mengajar di Sekolah Penang Free juga selama beberapa tahun. Ilmu Alam ialah mata pelajaran yang sangat disukainya dan beliau telah menjadi pakar dalam pengajaran mata pelajaran Ilmu Alam. Di Penang Free School, Haji Zainul Abidin telah terkenal dengan nama " Master Abidin", "S.M.Z.A." dan "Zorro". Selain daripada menjadi guru darjah, Allahyarham mengajar Ilmu Hisab, bahasa iNggeris, Bahasa Malaysia dan Bahasa Latin. Ia juga pernah mengajar Ilmu Simpan Kira di Sekolah Perempuan St. George.

Oleh kerana keinginan dan minatnya untuk terus maju dalam bidang pelajaran, beliau telah mengambil kursus dengan Universiti London sebagai penuntut luar dan telah berjaya menjadi anak Melayu yang pertama mendapat ijazah B.A. London. Allahyarham kemudiannya telah menjadi guru besar Sekolah Francis Light dalam tahun 1983, dan perkhidmatannya terganggu dalam masa pemerintahan Jepun dan seterusnya telah menjadi penyelia Stesyen Radio Pulau Pinang. Setelah British kembali memerintah negeri kita, Allahyarham telah dilantik menjadi Nazir Sekolah-Sekolah di Seberang Perai. Beliau bersara dalam tahun 1953 dan terus berkecimpung dalam bidang politik.

Allahyarham menjadi ahli UMNO yang cergas sehingga memimpin parti itu di Pulau Pinang selama 11 tahun. Dalam tahun 1955, Allayarham menang sebagai calon parti Perikatan dalam pilihanraya yang pertama di negara kita. Beliau dilantik menjadi ahli dalam University Court (University Malaya) selama beberapa tahun dan ahli Laporan Pelajaran Rahman Talib dan lain-lain. Beliau juga menjadi Ahli Alliance Council dalam tahun-tahun yang awal ketika negara kita berusaha mencapai kemerdekaan.

Pada masa lapangnya, Allahyarham suka mengarang buku-buku untuk pelajar. Selain dari itu, beliau juga mengubah lagu, memasak dan membaca. Sebagai seorang pengakap, Allahyarham menjadi Penolong Pesuruhjaya Pengakap daerah Pulau Pinang dan menjadi Pemeriksa ujian masakan pengakap-pengakap selama beberapa tahun. Memandang kepada jasa-jasanya kepada masyarakat, D.Y.M.M. Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agung telah menganugerahkan kepadanya Darjah Johan Mangku Negara dan Tuan Yang Terutama Negeri Pulau Pinang memberi tauliah Jaksa Pendamai pada beliau. Haji Zainul Abidin ialah seorang anak negeri Pulau Pinang yang telah menjadi pemimpin yang berkewibawaan kerana itulah namanya disanjung di beberapa tempat seperti Taman Abidin di Jalan Perak dan Jalan Zainul Abidin dekat bangunan UMNO, Pulau Pinang. Penamaan Sekolah Haji Zainul Abidin, yang mengambil sempena nama beliau, merupakan satu kebanggaan kepada beliau,

IN-HOUSE TRAINING 2013

Yesterday afternoon saw Mr Tan HL giving teachers of the school an in-house training on how to key in marks into the headcount programme supplied by the education department.

Last weekend a group of Girl Guides from the school joined other Guides in a group visit to Charis House for the old in Penang. They took foodstuff and other edibles to the old folk home. They even entertained the old folks with songs and a dance number.

This morning saw students of the school making a beeline to the respective booth to register for their actitivities for the year 2013. The students were told to register for three activities viz a Club or Society, Uniform Body and Game. It was sort of a record as the whole process took only 35 minutes.

This morning saw the counsellor of the school briefing the form 3 students on the anti-tetanus injection. Students were told that this is a compulsory injection and all the form 3 students must take the jab. The students were also informed about the benefits of taking the injection.

BOYS' BRIGADE 2013 PROMOTION

This morning saw the teacher-advisor of Boys' Brigade or BB in short promoting the activities and programme lined up for the year 2013. There was also a mini exhibiton regarding the gears and paraphernalia used by the BB to conduct their activities during at the school canteen for the students to view during recess.

This morning saw the St John Ambulance Cadets with their second day of promotiuon at the reading corner of the school. Many items were on display such as a tent, first aids kits, trophies and also paraphernalia used by them. The teacher-advisor also encouraged the students to join.

TAKLIMAT DISIPLIN UNTUK PELAJAR BARU 2013

This morning saw the head teacher of discipline giving a briefing to all the new students of the school matters pertaining to the school Merit-Demerit System and school regulations. Students were advised to put on their best behaviour in the school so as the process of learning and teaching can be carried out smoothly for the benefits of the students.

PERHIMPUNAN RASMI 2013

This morning saw the school assembled in front of a new open air stage specially built for the new year. Students were also arranged in a new formation facing the stage. As usual the official school started with the singing of the national and state anthem followed by the school song. Then it was the recitation of the Rukunegara.

Speeches were made by respective teachers and admin. Then assembly ended with another patriotic song "Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa."

BRIEFING ON SCHOOL REGULATIONS 2013

This morning saw the Senior Assistant of Students' Affair briefing new Remove and Form 1 students on the school rules and regulations. He also touched on the school merit and demerit system. He also advised the students to be punctual to school and also to follow the school regulations at all times.
