The school had its 47th Prize Giving Day 2011 recently. On hand to grace the occasion was the PTA chairman. It was a day of joy and celebration as students who excelled in their studies and co-curricular activties were honoured and given a prize by the principal and PTA chairman. Students also performed during the event and the school popular hip-hop group The Unknownz was not left out. They danced to the delight of all those present backed by the tune of Angry Bird. This afternoon saw a facilitator from SMJK (C) Chung Hwa Confucian presenting a motivational talk to all the fifth formers of the school at the meeting room. The talk covered all aspects of tackling the examination papers of 1119/1 and 1119/2. Hopefully the students picked up some tips and pointers to a better grade. This morning saw the launching of the merdeka month long celebration school level by the principal of the school. Flags were presented to the rpincipal who in return passed it to the Senior Asst. of Students Affair to be given to all the classes. The flags were to be put up in all the classes to start off the best decorated class competition. The event ended with a short poem on merdeka by fellow teachers. It was a patriotic event and in line will be many events such as poem recitation, singing of patriotic songs competition and a quiz on history leading to independence of Malaysia. Members of the school's Tae-kwondo Club were invited to take part in the United Tae-kwondo Academy 3rd Tournament at SJK(C) Chong Cheng primary school in Sungai Ara, Penang. The members did well and they harvested 2 gold and 2 silver medals in the group A pattern for 16 years and above; 2 silver and bronze medals in the free sparring for age 16 and above ; 1 silver medal in the group A pattern for age 15 and above and 1 bronze medal for free sparring in the age 15 and above group. During the school inaugural Canteen and Information Day 2011, the prancing "lions" of the school came acalling at the school office. It was to "bless" the office and bring more prosperity too. For the first time an uninvited icon of the school dubbed the SHZA fairy made a maiden appearance much to the amusement and also displeasure of some. All in all it was a day of fun and it showed what co-operation and unity could do for the school. Pada 25 Julai 2011, jam 1.30 petang, Persatuan Pendidikan Islam telah menganjurkan suatu ceramah yang bertajuk ‘Persediaan Menghadapi Bulan Ramadhan’ yang telah disampaikan oleh Ustaz Mohd Shukri bertempat di surau SMKHZA.

Ceramah ini bertujuan untuk memberi pendedahan kepada para pelajar tentang persediaan untuk menghadapi ibadat puasa sepanjang bulan Ramadhan nanti. Persediaan tersebut adalah dari segi aspek rohani dan jasmani. Para pelajar memberi perhatian dan kerjasama yang baik sepanjang ceramah berlangsung. Program tersebut tamat pada jam 2.30 petang.

Yesterday saw a number of the school students taking part on their own in the Penang Inclusion Orchestra. They had a rehearsal in the morning at Dewan Sri Pinang before the real performance at 2.30pm. Despite the rain, the hall was almost full. Astro also covered the event which will be aired on 31st August 2011 on channel 381. The concert was for charity and also in conjunction with the Georgetown Heritage festival 2011. The popular school hip-hop group "UNKNOWN" was featured in the Thursday StarMetro on page 11. They performed at the Dewan Budaya, USM recently for charity under Jammin' Sensation and St. Nicholas' Home. Bravo boys and may you continue to progress and dance more for charity. This morning the fifth-formers of the school were given a motivational talk on answering techniques for SPM History papar 1 and 2. The facilitator was an experience teacher with years of experience as a teacher and examiner. Hopefully the students picked up a pointer or two from the talk. The Boys' Brigade of the school had an expedition around the neighbourhood recently guided by senior members from the senior members from Air Itam Troop Headquarter. The members went around the vicinity of the school to gather information like the kind of trees and leaves, the number of schools and other information as part of the project. In conjunction with the Georgetown Festival 2011, Piano World Music Centre is doing a concert with warrior and legendary music as the theme. The concert will be held on 24th July 2011 at Dewan Sri Pinang, Penang at 2.30pm. Some students of the school especially those in the Music Club are involved. Those who are keen to soak in this traditional and legendary music can purchase the tickets from the Piano World Music Centre or from the Senior Assistant for Co-curriculum. Three fifth-formers of the school took part in The Star Mighty Minds Challenge at the 1st Avenue Mall in Komtar yesterday on the 8th Floor known as Cloud 8. Thirty over schools from both the lower and upper secondary schools all over Penang took part. It was a hive of activities as every participants of the schools tried to outdo one another to enter the final. It was a good exposure for the students of the school. Despite not entering the final, they could walk tall as they were the first batch of students taking part. A word of thanks to the teacher accompanying the students. This morning saw a travelling teacher of Australian origin popping into the school to share his experiences with selected students of the school at the multi-media room. His name is Mr. Andre and he could speak a smattering Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Hokkien and Thai. he claimed to have two sisters in Slovenia where he was brought up. He has a voracious appetite for Malaysian food especially the non-spicy type like roti canai, noodle soup and teh tarik.

The school was recently bestowed with two certificates of appreciation for academic achievement in the 2010 PMR and SPM examinations during the North East District teachers' day celebration held at the Sunshine Square Banquet Hall. Recently two new teachers were posted to the school to replace the two teachers who left the school. A teacher was transferred to the mainland while another had retired. Ustazah Fazlina was transferred to the mainland while Madam Lim had retired. The school wishes to welcome two new teachers viz Ustazah Nurul Hazwani and Puan Watriah. The school hiphop group "Unknown" got second placing in the High School Musical 3 "My School Rocks"dance contest held this afternoon at the Tunku Abdul Rahman College. The contest was organized by the Astro Disney Channel. The hall was packed to the brim and was a sea of din and colours. The music was blaring to the cheer, scream and whistle. The ambience was explosive from the start to the end. A busload of supporters also went to provide moral support. This morning saw many parents turning up at school to collect the report cards of their children. Some parents had earlier joined in the 1 Student 1 Sport 1 Malaysia Run 2011. They were treated to a scrumptious breakfast before meeting with the respective form teacher. Parents who wanted to know about their children's discipline were cordially entertained to the respective discipline teacher. All in all it was a day of goodwill and fun. Photos showing the event.

The 1 Student, 1 Sport, 1 Malaysia run was successfully carried out this morning as the weather was very conducive and cooling. Many parents also came to support the run and teachers, support staff and even the canteen man joined in the run. As the photos show everyone was smiling during the run. After that , a tug-of-war competition was carried out among the 4 sport houses. The Blue House emerged as the champion house in the event. The PTA chairman, Vice chairman and the school principal presented the medals and prizes to the winners. It was a great day.

Form 4 student of the school Ooi Vin Shern was featured in The Star Metro dated 30June 2011 on page 10 together with ex-student Tan Seng Keong. Both of them are members of the St. John Ambulance and they diligently put in 1,000 hours of community work to earn the Special Service Shield on Sunday. They were also sworn in as part of the Cadet's Code of Chivalry. Well-done boys. Keep it up.

This morning saw the launching the of the school's Co-operative Day for 2011. There was a tree-planting ceremony, opening ceremony, special sale and presentation of prizes and gifts. There was also a special sale at the Co-op Store. Students were seen crowding the store during recess. Form 3A and 3B students sat aptly at the multimedia room to soak into the vast experience of Mr. Su who readily shared his expertise on the subject. This morning saw a visit by officers from the Examination Board and also officers from the State Education Department. It was a visit relating to the teaching of motor servicing course offered by the school or in short MPV. On hand to receive the officers was the school principal. This afternoon saw members of the PTA gathered at the meeting room to discuss the impending Canteen cum Information Day 2011 to be held at the school premises on the 30th July 2011 from 8am to 2pm. The meeting saw many fruitful ideas being put forward and proposed for the benefits of all. The main purpose of the Canteen Day is to raise funds for putting a roof over the assembly area so that more activities can be carried out in comfort and not at the mercy of the elements such as hot sun and rain as the school sorely lacks a hall. Recently members of the Consumer Club visit the Silver Jubilee old folks home in Sungai Dua, Penang. They were accompanied by two teacher-advisors. At the home they went around helping to keep the place keep, entertaining and also attending to the needs of the folks at the home.

After that they went to the Queensbay Mall where they were put into groups to "shop" wisely. At the end of the day, they had to present their accounts and the reasons for the purchase. All in all it was a day well spent.

The weather was in its best element this morning and the school had its annual Sport Day at USM. Everything went on smoothly without a hitch and ended well at about 12.30 pm. The champion house is the Red House. The best march past team is the Fire Brigade cadets. The school is proud that all the teachers and students together with the support staff worked hand in hand to make this annual event a success. This morning the school had a rehearsal in preparation for the 38th Annual School Sports 2011. The weather was fine and everything went on smooth. The weather this afternoon was just prefect for the Standard Sports to be carried out. Specially selected students from respective houses tried to outdo each other by jumping higher, throwing further and jumping further in the long jump pit. The school fire brigade came in as 1st runner-up in a marching competition organized by the district education department which took place at SMK Air Itam last month. It was a proud moment for the fire brigade cadets who outclassed other cadets in term of discipline and pattern formation. It was a proud moment for fifth former Lee Kar Theng when she received her Queen Guide Certificate from the school principal during the official assembly this morning. It was an accumulation of 4 to 5 years of hardwork that she finally made it with the guidance of the teacher advisor.

She had personally received the certificate from the wife of the PM Datik Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor on 31 May 2011 at the G Hotel in Penang.

4th of June 2011 will always be remembered by ex-student Banurega as it was her wedding to Mr. Kesavan. The wedding reception was held at College general in Tanjung Bungah. It was an elaborate wedding dinner with live singers to entertain the crowd. To Banurega and Kesavan, we wish you a happy marriage, a marriage filled with warmth, love and happiness. Ex-principal Mr. Gan was in the StarMetro page 11 dated 1 June 2011. It was in conjunction with the MBS school 120th Anniversary celebration and also the opening of the MBS Heritage Centre. The coffee table book entitled 'Our Heritage' was also launched.
